The Carnation and The Limerick

"You don't grow into a commitment, you grow out of a commitment."  Several days earlier, you dropped this enormous hint that you were ready for me to ask you to be my girlfriend.  Really subtle, Jo.  I resisted the urge to ask you right then and there, because I had a plan.  My plan was actually to wait until the following Saturday, but I was quickly realizing that at least one of us was growing impatient.  Memorial Day would have to work.  I was driving back from Philly, and the plan was to pick you up on the way to Ben's to watch the lacrosse national championship game.  I knew this was a big day, so I spent the two hour drive doing breathing exercises and intense mental preparation.  After exchanging pleasantries with your parents, we headed out.  I spent the first few minutes of the drive ignoring you, trying to summon the courage to take the plunge.  I finally asked if you wanted to hear a story.  You did, so I recited my cheesy limerick.  By the end of it, you had a carnation, and I had a girlfriend.

There once was a young man named Nick
Who thought he was charming and slick
But then he met Jo
And wouldn't you know
She threw off his groove pretty quick

The way that he felt when she smiled
Left him very confused and beguiled
But she batted her eyes
At all of the guys
So she must not think him more worthwhile

They never would spend time alone
And they wouldn't talk long on the phone
But search as she may
He would still find a way
To keep all of his feelings unknown

When he finally stepped to the plate
And asked Jo to go on a date
She hadn't suspected
What Nick had projected
But still answered "Yea, that'd be great"

I want you to know how I feel
But it's always been hard to reveal
That I really like you
I'm convinced that I do
I just hope you believe that it's real

And now I would like to contend
That this purgatory should end
Like Pepper needs Salt
Girl, you make my heart halt
Joanna Faith, will you be my girlfriend?
